Steve Bruce admits he still can’t find the right balance

Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds dismantled the Birmingham side as a Nathaniel Mendez-Laing double and a Junior Hoilett strike consigned the visitors to defeat.
After the game Bruce, who was appointed as manager at Villa Park back in October 2016, revealed he is still struggling to find the right balance and is finding it difficult to instill the necessary spirit required to be competitive in the Championship.
“The centre-half bullied us all day long and unfortunately the longer it went on the worse we got and the more we unravelled,” said the former Hull City boss.
“We have to address that if we are going to try and succeed.
“It’s still our Achilles heel since I arrived, and I have to be brutally honest with myself too, I haven’t been able to address it in the six months I have been here.
“But when we are up against it away from home we haven’t got enough and the one thing I have had in all of my teams over the years – that’s why we have been successful – is a team that has a bit of resilience, is a bit up and at you and puts their boots on.
“Unfortunately today I have to be brutally honest that just doesn’t happen.”
Bruce added: “I have been here six months and a pre-season now and I still can’t get the balance right – that we can role our sleeves up and we are prepared for what the Championship is.
“As soon as we go a goal behind we go under and that for me is the most disappointing thing I can level at the team.
“But we have to be honest with each other and, collectively and individually, we are nowhere near it.”
